This is not merely an annoyance reserved for warm days. Uncontrolled sunlight can create glare, uncomfortable heat, screen visibility problems and uneven working conditions across an office. A bright, well-designed workplace ought to feel open and useful, not like an experiment in growing tomatoes beside a whiteboard.

Find the Problem Before Buying a Fix

The first step is to observe how each area behaves throughout the day. A room that seems perfectly pleasant during a nine o’clock viewing may become unworkable once the sun reaches a different angle. Ask staff where they avoid sitting, when video calls become difficult, and which screens turn into reflective black rectangles at particular times.

Walk through the premises in the morning, around midday and later in the afternoon. Note which windows face the strongest sun, where heat gathers, and whether nearby buildings, trees or external structures change the light pattern. Reception desks, south-facing meeting rooms, glass partitions and open-plan desks near large windows are frequent trouble spots.

It helps to distinguish between related problems. Brightness may make a room feel cheerful but still cause glare. Heat may build up even when nobody is facing the window. Privacy can be an issue at street level, while a top-floor boardroom may have plenty of privacy but no escape from the afternoon sun. Treating every window identically is usually how an office ends up with one room that feels gloomy and another that could charge admission as a sauna.

Match the Shading to the Job

Once the difficult areas are known, managers can compare options according to what each space actually needs. Roller blinds with appropriate screen fabrics can reduce glare while preserving some daylight and outside views. Venetian blinds offer adjustable light control, useful where sunlight moves across desks during the day. Vertical blinds can suit wide glazing or sliding doors, allowing sections to be angled rather than covering the entire opening at once.

For rooms that regularly overheat, more thermally effective materials may be worthwhile. Cellular blinds can help reduce heat transfer, while closely fitted systems can limit gaps around the glass. Rooflights and high-level windows need particular attention, as heat rising through a room does not politely stop at the ceiling.

The aim is not to black out every window at the first sight of sunshine. It is to give people control: enough shade for comfortable work, enough daylight to keep the office pleasant, and enough flexibility that a presentation does not require someone to perform a small climb across the furniture.

Consider Control, Timing and Daily Use

A shading system only helps if people can use it easily. Manual blinds may be entirely suitable for a small office where staff can adjust them as the light changes. In busy meeting rooms, however, controls that are awkwardly positioned or require a determined stretch across a conference table tend to remain untouched. The resulting glare is then treated as a permanent feature of the building, alongside the temperamental printer and the person who reheats fish at lunchtime.

Motorised blinds can make sense where windows are high, wide, numerous or difficult to reach. They can also be scheduled to lower before the strongest sunlight arrives, rather than after the room has already become uncomfortable. In spaces used for presentations, a simple control system can prevent the familiar ritual of half-closing the blinds, dimming the lights and still being unable to read the third slide.

Automation should serve a clear purpose. Linking blinds to timers, sunlight sensors or room-use schedules may be useful in larger offices, but a complicated system that nobody understands will not improve comfort. Consider how the room is actually used, who will operate the controls and whether staff need to override the settings when weather conditions change.

Build Solar Control into Workplace Planning

Shading works best when considered alongside the rest of the workplace environment. Air conditioning, ventilation, desk placement, screen positioning and the layout of meeting furniture all influence whether people feel comfortable. Moving a screen away from direct glare may solve a problem more cheaply than changing an entire window treatment, while a poorly ventilated room may need more than blinds alone.

Before making a decision, create a short brief for each affected area. Include the time of day the problem occurs, the direction of the windows, whether privacy is needed, how much daylight should remain and whether the room contains screens or presentation equipment. This gives suppliers and facilities teams something more useful than “the office gets a bit hot sometimes,” which is accurate but not especially diagnostic.

For major refurbishments, review glazing and shading early rather than treating them as an afterthought once the desks are in place. Concealed systems, rooflight blinds and bespoke fittings often need coordination with ceilings, electrics and interior finishes. A little planning at this stage can prevent expensive compromises later.

A Brighter Outlook Without the Bake

Good solar control does not mean sacrificing daylight or making a workplace feel closed off. It means recognising that light is useful only when people can work comfortably within it. By identifying the genuine hotspots, choosing shading that suits each room and making controls practical, managers can turn overheated spaces back into places where conversations, screens and concentration all stand a fair chance.
